posted Jul 1, 2010 4:09 PM by Joe McVety   [ updated Jul 7, 2010 9:57 AM ]

UPDATE!!!  The Port Arthur Marina Boat Launch will be made available to Derby participants for the week of the derby... see rules below

1.        Marina Park launch ramps will be open for launching from 5:30 am to 6 pm daily (except Wednesday July 14th when they will close at 4 pm) for participants in the Salmon Derby.  Only vehicles pulling a boat with drivers in possession of a valid Derby entry ticket will be allowed to enter the park.  Members of the fishing party will be asked to car pool because of limited parking on site.

2.        Additional security will be engaged to assist with orderly and timely vehicle movements to reduce the potential for delays entering the park or vehicles remaining on the Pearl St. rail crossing.

3.        The boat launch parking area will remain open for marina contract holder car parking; however, to ensure that boats can be launched and removed safely, there will    be barricades in place to temporarily create access lanes for trucks and boat trailers.  Truck and trailer parking for the Salmon Derby will be provided in a temporary lot on the road to the former Pool 6 building and along the road.

Press Release - 2010 Fun Derby

posted May 19, 2010 6:57 PM by Joe McVety   [ updated Jun 17, 2010 5:48 PM ]

The Thunder Bay Salmon Association wishes to announce a new event for Thunder Bay. The Woody's Trailer World and Princecraft Week Long Salmon Fun Derby presented by The Chronicle Journal and Dougall Media in support of the Thunder Bay Salmon Association to be held July 10-17, 2010. This is the first ever week long derby to be held in Thunder Bay.

The Thunder Bay Salmon Association was founded to raise salmon in our volunteer hatchery and to encourage and promote the sport of salmon fishing. This week long derby is both a fundraiser for the hatchery and an opportunity get out on Lake Superior and experience the thrill of catching a salmon while participating in a fun derby and having an opportunity to win one of many prizes.

Due to ongoing construction at the marina, our traditional 1 day derby held at Prince Arthur Marina will not be possible this year. We are using this opportunity to open up our derby to as many fisherman as possible by making it a week long event. As a result we do expect an increase in participants over the 1 day derby that we have held for many years. This 8 day derby from July 10-17 starts on one weekend and ends on the next weekend so anglers that only have weekends off have 3 days to fish. Shift workers that may not get weekends off can fish during the week. Anyone can fish mornings, afternoons or evenings. Out of town anglers will be encouraged to participate as they could come to fish any number of days during the derby.

Weather was a concern for many anglers participating in our past 1 day derbies. It may have been too windy, too cold or raining. With the week long derby, participants can choose to fish only on the days that suit them and their boat size. It will be safer and more enjoyable for everyone as there will no longer be pressure to get out on the lake fishing when anglers are not comfortable with the conditions.

Tickets will go one sale Thursday May 20 at our sponsor locations and are just $65 including the meal and awards at the Moose Hall or $50 if you do not attend the meal and awards. You do not have to be in attendance to win except for the door prize.

We encourage out of town anglers along the north shore to Marathon as well as our USA neighbours along the south shore to Duluth to participate in this fun derby. The Days Inn Thunder Bay is the official hotel for the derby and will offer a special rate for all derby participants.

There is over $25,000.00 in cash and prizes to be won. The largest salmon entered will win $3500.00 and anyone entering a salmon is eligible to win one of many mystery prizes including a $1000.00 cash mystery prize. There is a 14 and under category for the kids with a trophy for the largest salmon and mystery prizes for first, second and third. There is also a mystery prize for the largest salmon caught each day of the derby. The daily prize is donated by that days sponsor.

Participants may enter 1 fish per day but each participant is only allowed to win 1 cash or mystery prize.

A complete list of the rules and additional information can be found on the derby web site, www.tbderby.com.

We have 8 daily sponsors and each day the weigh in location will move to that daily sponsors business location. July 10 weigh in will be at J&J Sports, July 11 will be at McDonalds on Cumberland St, July 12 will be at George's Market, July 13 will be at Arhie's Fishing Charters at the Prince Arthur Marina,
July 14 will be at Canadian Tire in the Thunder Centre, July 15 will be at Scuttlebutts, July 16 will be at D&R Sporting Goods and July 17 will be at Badanai Chevrolet Cadillac.

We are extremely greatful to all these daily sponsors as well as Woody's Trailer World, Princecraft, The Chronicle Journal and Dougall Media as with out their financial support we would not be able to host this derby.

The Thunder Bay Salmon Association invites all anglers to participate in this fun derby and wishes everyone good fishing.
